Apart from push email, Mobile Gateway Enterprise Edition allows your users to wirelessly access and synchronise their contact lists, calendar entries, and notes. Changes made on their mobile devices will immediately update the server and vice versa.

As Mobile Gateway Enterprise Edition simply functions as a link between your email server and the users handset, it does not store any email or PIM data. Username and passwords information is the only data stored by Mobile Gateway Enterprise Edition. This authentication information is stored securely within the database, and then encrypted. It cannot be accessed by anyone other than the user.

ActiveSync is a proprietary synchronization protocol originally developed by Microsoft for local PC-based synchronization of calendar, contacts, tasks and Email between Outlook and PDAs or Smartphones. ActiveSync was mainly used to transfer data between a PC and the PDA using a local cable or infrared connection. In later versions of Exchange, Microsoft has added support for ActiveSync supporting wireless synchronization. However, since ActiveSync is a Microsoft proprietary technology, it is mostly supported by PDAs or Smartphones running Windows operating systems.

Only a small amount of mobile devices utilize the Windows Mobile operating system and thus support for ActiveSync is very limited.
