How the iPhone Is Suiting Up for Work

By Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica
The rapid take-up of our free email trial by iPhone users that wanted to synchronize with Microsoft Exchange before Apple provided this service, demonstrated that there was a strong demand to take consumer devices into the corporate environment. It was only a matter of time before Apple recognized this potential and provided native support for Microsoft Exchange.
However, the proprietary Microsoft ActiveSync technology licensed by Apple is limited to Microsoft Exchange on the server side while Synchronica Mobile Gateway connects to many other services, such as Lotus Notes, Gmail, and others.
With the availability of the iPhone SDK, Synchronica now has the opportunity to provide a SyncML client for the Apple iPhone, adding industry-standard calendar and contact synchronization for the iPhone via Mobile Gateway.
Finally, we should not forget that the smartphone market still represents only a small percentage of the global market. Apple is targeting to ship ten million devices within the next twelve months while industry analysts expect the mobile phone industry to ship more than 1.2 billion devices in the same period.
Synchronica Mobile Gateway is designed to support all mobile phones, smartphones and mass market feature phones, and has the potential to deliver mobile email and synchronization services to more than 1.5 billion phones worldwide.
About Mobile Gateway
Synchronica's Mobile Gateway 4.0 provides push email and synchronization to consumers and business users on any handset without requiring additional client software. The multi-protocol solution combines industry-standard LEMONADE and OMA EMN push email with Email to SMS, WAP Push, and Email to MMS to provide the best possible user experience from high-end smartphones to entry-level devices. Address book and calendar synchronization using SyncML completes the service offering for business users, as well as consumers. Serving consumers and prosumers, Mobile Gateway includes back-end support for POP3 and IMAP mailboxes, connecting to popular services, such as AOL or Gmail. Business mailboxes supported include Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, and Sun Java Communications Suite. Realtime RSS feeds connect users to newsfeeds and deliver social networking updates.
