Synchronica SimpleMail - Consumer Push Email for Even the Most Basic Handsets

  • Mass market consumer push email (CPE) solution for basic and feature phones, ideal for emerging markets in Asia
  • Extends addressable market for mobile email to almost 100 percent of mobile handsets in use today
  • Two new emerging market mobile operators have already licensed Synchronica SimpleMail technology

Mobile Asia Congress, Macau, Hall E, Stand F42, November 18, 2008. - Synchronica plc (AIM: SYNC.LN), the international provider of mobile email and synchronization solutions, is showcasing Synchronica SimpleMail, its new consumer push email (CPE) solution that brings mobile email to almost 100 percent of handsets in use today. Synchronica SimpleMail extends the addressable market for push email to even the most basic handsets, making it an ideal service for mobile operators in emerging markets in Asia and beyond.

Synchronica has already signed license agreements for the new technology with two mobile operators in emerging markets - including one in India - and has received an expansion order from a mobile operator in Russia / CIS for additional licenses. Synchronica believes that its solution is ideal for consumers in countries characterized by low teledensity and internet penetration, such as India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Pakistan. SimpleMail provides mobile operators in these highly competitive markets with an effective way to reduce churn as it locks consumers into a highly addictive service.

According to Frost & Sullivan's new study, Asia Pacific's Final Wireless Growth Frontier (August 2008), Asia's emerging markets - defined in this study as Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam - are expected to see mobile subscriber net gains of 573 million by the end of 2012, which will take the total number of subscribers in these countries to an estimated 1.06 billion subscribers.

Synchronica SimpleMail includes email-to-SMS and email-to-MMS gateways and a clientless solution for WAP Push / XHTML browser access. It also features the patented Optimizer transcoding gateway which reduces the size of pictures and allows a large variety of attachments, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, to be displayed on feature phones that would otherwise be unable to support this functionality.

Users can register for the service from their mobile handset rather than having to register via a PC - a key benefit in emerging markets where the PC penetration is low.

Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, comments: "Asia represents a key market for Synchronica as shown by the three significant licensing agreements we have won in the region in the last six months alone. We are also working closely with our distribution partner Brightstar to strengthen our position in this important region. There are more than 3.5 billion mobile users worldwide and more than two billion mailboxes in use worldwide, and our mission is to bring mobile email to the mass market on the widest range of devices. Synchronica SimpleMail which is based on technology from our recent acquisition of AxisMobile extends our reach from smartphones and feature phones right down to even the most basic of handsets."

Forecasts point to emerging markets as a breakthrough area for mass market mobile email. Informa predicts that there will be 4.81 billion mobile phone subscribers by 2012, with the next billion subscribers coming predominantly from emerging markets where PC and fixed-line penetration is low.

Key features of Synchronica SimpleMail include:

  • Email-to-SMS and Email-to-MMS gateways
  • Clientless solution for WAP / XHTML browser access
  • Email transcoding and compression engine reduces network traffic and enables standard mobile phones to display a variety of attachments
  • Support for DOC, ZIP, PDF, MPEG, MP3, and HTML attachments
  • Supports Gmail, Yahoo Mail, MSN Hotmail Plus, and any POP3 or IMAP4 mailbox
  • Realtime device auto-detection
  • Multi-lingual support (English, Cyrillic, Chinese, Arabic, Kanji)
