Mobile Gateway for Device Manufacturers

Next-Generation Messaging for Mass-Market Mobile Phones

In an evolving handset market, devices are now seen as end-to-end solutions rather than just competing on hardware features or design. Increasingly, device manufacturers are differentiating their mobile phones based on bundled services. Users now expect their devices to be connected to social networks and messaging communities, even on mass-market feature phones.

Mobile Gateway 5 is the leading mobile infrastructure based on industry-standards enabling device manufacturers to add next-generation mobile messaging services to mass-market devices. Mobile Gateway provides clientless push Email and Synchronization, Instant Messaging, Social Networking Services, and access to Web Feeds for mass-market mobile phones. Unlike other solutions, Mobile Gateway does not need a JAVA application, but instead interfaces with the native messaging clients of the device platform, delivering the best possible user experience with minimal memory footprint.

  • Complete messaging suite including push email, synchronization of calendar, contacts and tasks, instant messaging, social networking, and web feeds
  • Provides a broad range of industry standards for interfacing with native messaging applications including LEMONADE, IMAP IDLE, OMA EMN, OMA CP, SyncML, ActiveSync, and OMA IMPS
  • Addresses consumer segment with integrated support for Yahoo, Gmail, Windows Live, or any IMAP4 or POP3 mailbox
  • Support for Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, and Sun Java Communications Suite enables manufacturers to address the lucrative business market
  • Attachment transcoding delivers email attachments to feature phones and reduces network bandwidth consumption
  • Push notifications and status updates for a range of popular social networking services (SNS) including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn
  • Instant Messaging gateway to popular online services - GoogleTalk, Facebook Chat, AIM, and optional Yahoo Messenger, MSN and ICQ
  • Built-in XMPP server can be used to create a viral, "sticky" and branded instant messaging community
  • RSS web feed connectors push updates from literally thousands of online news and entertainment sites

Proprietary messaging solutions typically require a proprietary JAVA client to be installed, which was sometimes seen as a quick solution to satisfy the new market requirements. However, this approach has failed because JAVA clients typically do not integrate well into the user experience of the device platform and are not appropriate for core applications which require tight integration with the native address book. JAVA clients also have a substantial memory footprint and processor overhead, preventing the application in low-end devices.

Mobile Gateway does not require a proprietary JAVA application, but instead provides an industry standard gateway interfacing with the native messaging clients of the device platform. This provides a superior user experience due to tight integration between the applications. It also provides a consistent user experience across the UI elements of the platform, uses a smaller memory footprint, executes faster, and supports even low-end platforms.
